Sharpening and Maintaining Your Spearhead

1. The Geometry of the Strike: Choosing the Right Angle

The sharpening angle determines the balance between durability and penetration:

• Reef Hunting: Use a 60° angle. When hunting near rocks and coral, a 60° tip is more robust and resistant to blunting or "mushrooming" upon impact with the reef.
• Blue Water Hunting: Use a 30°–45° angle. For large pelagic fish, a steeper, needle-like point is essential to pierce through thick scales and dense bone.

2. The Tri-Cut Advantage

Our shafts feature a Tri-cut (three-sided) tip. Unlike conical points, the Tri-cut design is exceptionally easy to maintain in the field. By simply grinding the three flat planes against a stone, you can restore a factory-level edge in minutes.

3. Field Expediency: Wilderness Sharpening

In the wild, you don’t need a professional workshop. Any hard stone can serve as an emergency whetstone. Granite is highly recommended for its abrasive density. Simply find a flat piece of rock and refine your Tri-cut edges at the camp or on the boat.

4. Preserving Hardness: Heat Treatment & Quenching

Our spearheads are crafted from high-hardness Titanium alloy and undergo a specialized quenching process to maximize durability.

• Avoid Overheating: If using an electric angle grinder, keep your grinds short and frequent. Excessive heat will cause the metal to anneal (soften), destroying its hardness.
• Re-Quenching: If the tip accidentally overheats and turns red/blue, it has lost its temper. You must re-quench the tip (heating it to a cherry red and quickly cooling it in oil or water) to restore its structural integrity.
