
Why Solo Diving Cannot Be Completely Avoided: From Buddy System to Safety System > Safety scope: This article does not promote solo diving and does not provide a solo-diving procedure. It examines functional solo exposure and the difference between another person being present and a safety system that can actually work. “Never dive alone” is an important and memorable rule. But if it is interpreted as “another person is in the water, therefore we are safe,” the rule can create a blind spot. The functional question is harder: when something goes wrong, can another person detect it, reach the diver, understand the problem, intervene correctly, and continue the response through the surface and the call for help? If those functions are missing, two people may simply be two independent divers entering the water together.
Why the Buddy System Exists
The buddy system turns another person into safety redundancy. In scuba, a buddy may help with gas loss, equipment failure, buoyancy problems, entanglement, navigation, illness or impaired judgment. In freediving, a partner is uniquely valuable when loss of motor control or blackout removes the diver’s ability to self-rescue.
The system can therefore reduce some incident probability and improve survival after an incident has already begun. The second role is crucial: redundancy cannot restore consciousness or turn an incapacitated diver into a rescuer.
An effective buddy must be able to see, reach, understand, respond correctly and continue the response.
Common failure modes break those links. Buddies separate beyond useful response distance. Both become absorbed in photography, hunting or navigation. One cannot reach the other’s depth. Temporary partners do not understand unfamiliar equipment. Each assumes the other can self-rescue. A surface safety diver misses the final ascent. The buddy is also tired, hypoxic, task-loaded or impaired.
The label can also encourage risk compensation: people accept a depth, sea state or task they would otherwise refuse because “someone is with me.” Public evidence does not support one universal numerical estimate for this effect, but human-factors logic and incident analysis make false reassurance a legitimate teaching concern.
Freediving and Scuba Need Different Systems
Freediving risk has a critical window. LMC and blackout often occur during the final ascent, at surfacing or immediately afterwards. Once consciousness or motor control is lost, self-rescue disappears. Deep training and competition therefore use staged safety: safety divers meet the athlete during the return, while the line, lanyard, counterweight, underwater monitoring, surface team and medical response cover other layers.
This is not a claim that deep water is safe. It is an allocation decision: human safety divers cannot accompany every metre, so intervention capacity is concentrated where it is most valuable. Plan deviation, poor visibility, a deep event or an unrecovered safety diver can still defeat the system.
Scuba risk is distributed through more of the dive. Gas, regulators, buoyancy, navigation, entanglement, narcosis, medical problems and surface conditions may matter at different stages. Scuba buddy practice therefore emphasises planning, communication, response distance, gas and exit rules, and mutual redundancy throughout the dive.
Rescue Knowledge Is Part of Buddy Competence
The physiology and equipment surrounding an unresponsive freediver and an unresponsive scuba diver are not the same. Freediving rescue must prevent water entering the airway at the wrong time; scuba ascent also involves expanding gas in the lungs and the need to avoid obstructing its escape.
This is not a procedural lesson. Rescue belongs in qualified training, simulation and repeated practice. The teaching point is that wrong intervention can add harm. A person without the relevant knowledge does not become an effective safety system merely by being called a buddy.
Trained Independence Is Not Accidental Isolation
Self-Reliant, Independent and Solo Diver courses show that professional training systems recognise functional solo exposure. They generally address prerequisites, redundancy, planning, navigation, gas management, self-rescue, environment selection and conservative judgment.
That should be distinguished from entering the water alone without preparation. But the distinction does not mean training replaces a buddy. Redundancy reduces equipment single points of failure. Self-rescue expands the set of manageable problems. Environmental judgment reduces exposure. None of them becomes a second person when a diver suddenly loses consciousness, becomes severely incapacitated or cannot free themselves.
A more accurate claim is that independent capability reduces some dependencies while leaving irreducible residual risk.
Certification Is Not Competence
A certification records that minimum requirements were met at one point. Current competence also depends on skill retention, recent experience, environmental familiarity, fitness, judgment, task loading and continuing rescue practice.
Two underprepared divers do not become safe through arithmetic. A highly trained independent diver does not become immune through equipment. The first situation lacks effective rescue capability; the second lacks human redundancy after incapacitation. They are different risk combinations, not a simple contest between one person and two.
Expertise Cannot Make Risk Zero
In May 2026, five Italian divers died in an underwater cave incident in Vaavu Atoll, Maldives. Publicly confirmed facts include a cave at about fifty metres or deeper, experienced divers and instructors among the dead, and the later location and recovery of four missing divers. The cause remained under investigation when this article was checked. It should not be assigned to getting lost, narcosis or a single error without evidence.
In 2015, elite freediver Natalia Molchanova disappeared near Formentera during a non-record dive. She was presumed dead and was never found. Public evidence is likewise insufficient to state the final cause.
These cases do not prove that one system always fails. They do challenge the assumption that experience, status, equipment or a team automatically removes residual risk in complex environments.
Risk Is Not Entirely Private
Consequences spread to families, partners, crews, medical services, coast guards and search teams. A Maldivian military diver also died during the 2026 recovery operation. Choosing to accept risk does not make every consequence private.
Recognising that solo exposure exists is therefore different from recommending it to ordinary recreational divers. Honest education must discuss autonomy, competence limits and responsibility to others at the same time.
From Buddy System to Safety System
The useful shift is from asking whether the form exists to asking whether the function exists. A safety system may combine an effective buddy, dedicated safety divers, a line and recovery system, redundant gas, explicit abort rules, surface support, oxygen, communications and a search plan. The correct combination changes with the activity.
The recurring questions are simple: Who is watching? Can they arrive in time? Do they have the right competence? If the first layer fails, what is next? Which risks remain outside the system?
“Never dive alone” remains a conservative starting point for the public. Mature education must go further: identify functional solo exposure, reject false reassurance, build independent capability and become a buddy another diver can genuinely trust.
